1. Minimize Disturbed Areas:
-By carefully delineating the area that will be disturbed by grading or earthwork activities, you can greatly reduce the potential for soil erosion. Installing silt fencing to act as a buffer between area to be graded and area not to be disturbed is one of the easiest and most cost effective solutions and is usually required. Hay bails can also be used.
2. Phase Earthwork Activity:
-When possible another technique used for minimizing the duration of exposed soil is phasing. By scheduling or sequencing work and focusing on certain areas at a time you can minimize the amount of soil exposed to the elements at any given time. Finishing and stabilizing these areas with proper erosion control i.e silt fencing, waddles, hay bails, control blankets, bonded fiber matrices and turf reinforcement mats as quickly as possible can be one of your most effective solutions
3. Control Any Water Flowing:
-Plan for any potential storm water flows and slow flows to prevent erosion. Dig diversion ditches to direct runoff and storm water flows away from unprotected slopes and environmentally sensitive areas. Remember we can’t stop the flow of water and we don’t want to. The speed at which this water flows carries the true destructive force, so the slower it is moving the less material it moves.
4. Stabilize Soil Promptly:
-When earthwork activities have stopped ether permanently or temporarily the area should have erosion control measures installed. Provide either permanent of temporary measures to exposed soil. Some options are, Temporary seeding, mulches, matrices, biodegradable natural fiber blankets and even hay. these are just a few.
5. Protect Slopes:
-Protect all slopes with appropriate erosion controls. Steeper slopes, slopes with highly erodible soils, or long slopes require a more complex combination of controls. Silt fence and fiber rolls “Waddles” may also be used to help control erosion and should be installed on horizontal contours spaced at 10 to 20 foot intervals.
6. Protect Storm Drain Inlets:
-Install inlet protection before soil is disturbed. We do not want eroded material finding its way into our storm water systems.
7. Establish Perimeter Controls:
– This is easily achieved using silt fencing or hay bails to designate an “out of bounds” are around edge of construction site.
8. Established Construction Site Exits:
-Vehicles entering and leaving the site have potential to track significant amounts of sediment onto streets. Construction exits “when necessary” can have crushed rock entries 3″ to 6″ rock works well and steel rattle plates to dislodge dirt from exiting vehicles.
9. Inspect and maintain:
-Everything listed above must be continually inspected. The weather takes its toll and many erosion control measures must be re-installed and maintained throughout the life of the project.
